Submission Requirements

All submissions must have at least one PCSA member as author, co-author, or sponsor. Submissions without a PCSA member author or PCSA member sponsor will not be reviewed.

Trainee Forum Competition

The top-scoring trainee abstract from each of the four Caucus Regions will be selected for podium presentation and the overall winner will be based on clarity, focus, and relevance to surgical practice.

A trainee is defined as an intern, resident, or fellow enrolled in an ACGME-accredited program. Upon submission, please indicate if you would like to be considered for the Trainee Forum Competition. A letter from the Program Director stating that the trainee will present the abstract, is in good standing, and performed the predominant portion of work must be uploaded with your abstract submission.

New Member Prize

If you have been inducted as a New Member of the PCSA during the past three years, you qualify to compete for the New Member Prize. Please indicate during the submission process if you wish to be considered for this award.

Meeting Participation Requirements

All presenters and PCSA Member Sponsor/Senior Author for all accepted podium presentations are required to register for the PCSA Annual Meeting prior to arrival and are responsible for their own travel expenses.

The PCSA member author/sponsor must be registered prior to the meeting and be prepared to close the discussion. It is the responsibility of the presenting author to communicate with the senior author regarding acceptance and abstract and manuscript status.

Abstract Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts must conform to the exact size and format specified in the Abstract Submission Form.
  • Abstracts may not exceed 250 words. Abstracts that are too brief or contain insufficient data will not be considered favorably by the Program Committee.
  • Figures, tables, and images attached to accepted abstract submissions will not be printed in the Proceedings.
  • Do not use any special characters within your abstract submission.
  • To enable blinded review, do not reference identifying information in the body of the abstract.
  • Abstracts using data in a concurrent submission elsewhere or published previously will not be reviewed, except for work submitted to the ACS Surgical Forum.
  • If you select a Podium Presentation, you may automatically be considered for a Brief Podium Presentation if your abstract is not selected for the podium
  • Notification of abstract acceptance and additional meeting related correspondence will be sent to the submitting author by October 2026.

Manuscript Guidelines

  • To generate thoughtful discussion, authors of accepted podium abstracts are required to submit a near final manuscript draft to their discussant no later than January 15, 2027. Discussants will be selected by the Program Committee.
  • Authors of accepted Podium abstracts are encouraged, but not required, to submit a manuscript to JAMA Surgery after the PCSA annual meeting. The Program Committee will recommend which manuscript type (Research Letter or Original Investigation) is most appropriate for publication in JAMA Surgery. Authors of accepted Brief-Podium presentations may also optionally submit their manuscripts to JAMA Surgery in Research Letter format. Please access the JAMA Surgery website for the most recent version of Instructions for Authors.
  • For those who wish to submit manuscripts to JAMA Surgery after the meeting, all submissions will require a pre-review by the PCSA Publications Committee. Following the meeting, authors will need to upload their manuscript submission for pre-review by the PCSA Publications Committee. The deadline for submission of manuscripts for pre-review incorporating discussion from the meeting is February 22, 2027.
  • The PCSA Publications Committee will return peer review suggestions to authors to help improve chances of publication acceptance.
  • Final manuscripts are expected to incorporate feedback from the discussion at the meeting, senior authors, and the PCSA Publications Committee review. Failure to submit the manuscript format (research letter or original investigation) recommended by the Program Committee may be grounds for rejection by JAMA Surgery editors. Final manuscripts must be submitted through the JAMA Surgery portal directly by authors by April 15, 2027.

The PCSA Program Committee relies on the creativity, expertise, and engagement of our members to develop an exceptional scientific program. We encourage you to submit your highest-quality and most impactful work for consideration.

We look forward to seeing you in Hawaii.
